This Softail-based blacked-out cruiser was introduced by Harley-Davidson as a mid-model-year 1998 addition to the lineup, giving the brand a more stripped, dark, custom-styled factory motorcycle. It was positioned as one of the more aggressive-looking members of the Softail family, with a minimalist stance, hidden rear suspension, and a showroom custom attitude that helped distinguish it from the more classic chrome-heavy Harley cruisers of the era. Harley-Davidson service documentation identifies the Night Train nameplate beginning with the 1998 FXSTB and continuing through the 2009 model year. Over that run, it remained closely associated with the low-slung Softail platform and the factory custom look that made it a favorite among riders who wanted a darker, drag-bar-style cruiser without building one from scratch. The nameplate was discontinued after 2009 and did not continue into the 2010 Softail model range.
