Kia traces its roots to Kyungsung Precision Industry, founded by Kim Cheol-ho in 1944 to manufacture bicycle parts in Korea. Renamed Kia Industries in 1952, the company produced Korea’s first domestically made bicycle before expanding into motorcycles, three-wheeled cargo vehicles, trucks and passenger cars. The Brisa represented its early passenger-car ambitions, while the Bongo became closely associated with light commercial transport. Later models such as the Pride and Sportage helped establish Kia in international markets. Following financial difficulties in the late 1990s, Kia became part of Hyundai Motor Group. During the 2000s and 2010s, a stronger emphasis on design and distinctive vehicles such as the Soul and rear-wheel-drive Stinger broadened the marque’s cultural and enthusiast appeal. Kia has also developed a significant presence in SUVs, family vehicles and electric cars while retaining its longstanding commercial-vehicle business.
