Chevrolet was founded in Detroit in 1911 by racing driver and engineer Louis Chevrolet and automobile entrepreneur William C. Durant. Named for Louis Chevrolet, the company became part of General Motors in 1918 and developed into GM’s broad-market vehicle brand. Chevrolet has produced passenger cars, pickup trucks, sport-utility vehicles, commercial vehicles and performance models across many price ranges. Historically significant nameplates include the Suburban, introduced in 1935; the Corvette sports car, launched in 1953; and the Camaro, which joined the American pony-car market for 1967. Models such as the Bel Air, Impala, Chevelle and successive generations of Chevrolet pickups also became closely associated with postwar American motoring. The 1955 small-block V8 had an especially lasting influence on Chevrolet performance and hot-rodding culture.
