The Story of the FXSTS / Springer Softail

The Springer Softail was Harley-Davidson’s factory-built return to the classic springer front end, introduced for the 1988 model year as part of the Softail family. It paired the concealed rear-suspension Softail chassis with a traditional-looking sprung front fork, giving the motorcycle a distinctly vintage stance while keeping it in Harley-Davidson’s modern big-twin lineup. That combination made it stand out immediately from other Softail variants and helped establish the Springer as one of the most recognizable Harley cruisers of its era.

In Harley-Davidson’s model-code system, FXSTS identified the Springer Softail. Over its production life, the model evolved with the rest of the Softail range, reflecting changes in engine and equipment while retaining the springer front-end identity that defined the nameplate. The bike became especially associated with the early-1990s custom-cruiser look, when nostalgic styling was a major theme in Harley-Davidson’s cruiser range.

The nameplate remained in regular production through the 2006 model year, after which Harley-Davidson did not continue the FXSTS designation as a standard catalog model. Later factory springer-themed Softails appeared under different model codes, including limited-edition and heritage-oriented variants, but those were separate nameplates rather than a continuation of FXSTS itself. As a result, the Springer Softail is best understood as a single continuous production run from 1988 through 2006, notable for bringing Harley’s classic springer fork back to the factory lineup in modern form.
