MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the FLS103 / Softail Slim

The Slim nameplate arrived for the 2012 model year as Harley-Davidson’s stripped-back take on the classic big-twin cruiser. It was styled to evoke postwar bobbers and home-built customs, with a narrow rear end, chopped fenders, a solo seat, and a deliberately minimal look that put the engine and proportions at the center of the design. In Harley-Davidson’s Softail family, it sat as a more elemental alternative to the fuller-bodied Heritage and Fat Boy models, aimed at riders who wanted a low, clean, old-school silhouette rather than touring-friendly equipment.

Through its original production run, the model kept that basic character while evolving with the rest of the Softail line. The Slim was sold as a distinct model year after year, and in 2017 Harley-Davidson expanded the lineup with a more aggressive Slim S variant that added higher-performance hardware and darker custom styling. That same year also marked the end of the original Slim’s first-era form.

When Harley-Davidson reshuffled the Softail range for 2018, the Slim concept returned in a revised form under a new internal designation, but the original FLS-era model belongs to the 2012–2017 run. For enthusiasts, it remains one of the clearest modern Harley interpretations of the lean, postwar bobber aesthetic.
