Ford’s E-550 was the heaviest-duty member of the E-Series cutaway family for a brief, early-2000s run. It arrived for the 2002 model year as the E-550 Econoline Super Duty, positioned above the E-450 for commercial upfitters that needed a sturdier chassis for large shuttle bodies, specialty vans, ambulances, and other vocational applications. For 2003, Ford simplified the naming to E-550 Super Duty while keeping the model in the same work-oriented role.
The E-550 was notable because it extended the E-Series lineup into a higher GVWR class than the more familiar E-350 and E-450, giving body builders another Ford-based option for demanding commercial use. It shared the basic cab-and-cutaway architecture of the E-Series rather than being a separate van design, but the E-550 designation signaled a more robust foundation for heavy-duty conversions.
Production was short-lived. After the 2003 model year, Ford ended the E-550 nameplate and did not carry it forward into later E-Series revisions. Today it is remembered as a niche, upfitter-focused variant that filled the gap between Ford’s mainstream E-Series cutaways and its larger medium-duty commercial trucks.
