MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the Bronco II

Introduced in March 1983 for the 1984 model year, this compact SUV was Ford’s smaller, Ranger-based answer to the growing demand for a more manageable off-road utility vehicle. It sat below Ford’s full-size utility vehicle in the lineup and shared much of its basic mechanical foundation with the Ranger pickup, giving it a truck-like character in a shorter, more urban-friendly package. That formula made it a recognizable part of Ford’s 1980s truck and SUV family: simple, rugged, two-door, and aimed at buyers who wanted trail ability without the size and weight of a full-size utility vehicle.

The nameplate ran through the 1990 model year as a single continuous production period. Over that span, it helped define the compact SUV segment for Ford and became known for its boxy proportions, short wheelbase, and straightforward utilitarian appeal. It also became associated with the era’s shift toward smaller, more fuel-conscious trucks and sport-utilities, reflecting changing buyer tastes after the late-1970s energy crises. Ford ended the nameplate after 1990 when the Explorer entered the segment for 1991, effectively replacing it in the company’s lineup.

Today, this model is remembered as an important transitional Ford SUV: smaller than the classic full-size off-roader, but still a true truck-based utility vehicle with strong enthusiast interest and a clear place in Ford’s truck history.
