MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the CLT9000

Ford’s CLT9000 was the tandem-axle cab-over variant of Ford’s 9000-series heavy trucks, created for long-haul and vocational operators who wanted the packaging advantages of a COE with the larger chassis capacity of a tandem tractor. It appeared in Ford’s 1978-era truck data book and sales literature as part of the new CL family, which marked Ford’s modern highway cab-over push in the Louisville heavy-truck line. Through the 1980s, the CLT9000 remained the tandem counterpart to the single-drive CL9000, and Ford continued to refine the cab with updated trim, equipment, and interior choices rather than replacing the basic concept. The truck was offered in multiple sleeper and non-sleeper arrangements, reflecting its role as an owner-operator and line-haul tractor. By the late 1980s, Ford brochures still presented the CLT9000 as a serious over-the-road tractor in the 9000-series range, and Ford’s 1991 data book still listed the model. The nameplate therefore belongs to the original continuous CL/CLT 9000 cab-over run that began in the late 1970s and ended with the 1991 model year.
