Ford introduced this midsize crossover in North America for the 2007 model year, helping popularize the idea of a car-based SUV at a moment when the market was moving away from truck-derived utility vehicles. It arrived with Ford’s then-new crossover positioning: a five-passenger vehicle aimed at buyers who wanted a more road-oriented alternative to traditional body-on-frame SUVs, while still offering the higher seating position and practicality that made the segment attractive. Over time, it became one of Ford’s key mainstream utility nameplates in the U.S. and Canada, and it also served as an important global product as Ford expanded the badge into additional markets, including Europe, where a new generation went on sale in 2015. The model evolved through several major updates, including a more refined second generation for the 2015 model year and a refreshed, more modernized version for the 2019 model year. Performance-oriented and premium-leaning variants later broadened its image, including the ST family and other appearance and equipment packages that gave the vehicle a sportier character without changing its core mission. In Ford’s U.S. lineup, production ultimately wound down after the 2024 model year, closing a run that lasted nearly two decades and left the nameplate as one of the brand’s most recognizable crossovers of the modern era.
