This midsize sedan arrived for the 1995 model year as part of Ford’s push into the global “world car” era, replacing the Tempo/Topaz four-door in the North American lineup. It was closely related to the first-generation European Mondeo, and its arrival marked a more modern packaging and chassis direction for Ford’s mainstream passenger cars. The car was sold as a practical family sedan, but it also carried a more European flavor in its road manners and styling than many earlier domestic rivals.
The model’s run was brief but notable. A mid-cycle update for 1998 gave it a freshened front and rear appearance, and Ford also expanded the performance story with SVT versions that gave the nameplate a cult following among enthusiasts. Those hotter variants helped define the car’s identity beyond basic commuter duty, even though sales never reached the levels Ford had hoped for in the midsize segment.
Production ended after the 2000 model year, making this a single continuous North American run with no later revival under the same nameplate.
