BMW’s F 650 was introduced in 1993 as the company’s first modern single-cylinder entry-level motorcycle, marketed at launch as the F 650 “Funduro.” It marked an important shift for BMW Motorrad, which had traditionally been associated with shaft-drive boxer twins and touring machines. The F 650 was developed with Aprilia and Rotax, and it stood out as BMW’s first motorcycle to use chain final drive instead of the brand’s familiar shaft drive. That made it a more accessible, lightweight, and easygoing BMW aimed at riders who wanted everyday versatility rather than long-distance luxury.
The model quickly earned a reputation as a friendly, practical all-rounder and became an important sales success for BMW in the 1990s. Its combination of simple mechanical layout, upright riding position, and do-it-all character helped establish BMW in a broader segment of the market, especially among newer riders and those looking for a manageable adventure-style machine before that category was fully defined.
The F 650 nameplate itself belonged to this first production run, which lasted from 1993 through 1999. In BMW’s later motorcycle history, the company expanded the F-series with related but distinct models such as the F 650 GS and F 650 CS, but those were separate nameplates rather than a continuation of the original F 650. The original F 650 remains notable as the model that opened the door for BMW’s modern single-cylinder middleweight era.
