The Story of the G 650 GS

The BMW G 650 GS was BMW Motorrad’s lightweight single-cylinder adventure bike for riders who wanted the GS character in a smaller, more approachable package. It arrived for the 2009 model year as the revival and reworking of BMW’s earlier single-cylinder GS idea, following the F 650 GS lineage and reintroducing the nameplate after a short break. BMW positioned it as an entry point into the GS family, emphasizing everyday usability, manageable size, and touring-friendly versatility rather than big-bore performance.

For 2011, BMW expanded the concept with the G 650 GS Sertão, a more off-road-oriented sibling aimed at riders who wanted a rougher, more trail-focused interpretation of the same basic formula. That model gave the platform a broader identity, with the standard G 650 GS remaining the more road-biased, accessible version and the Sertão serving as the adventure-leaning variant.

The G 650 GS stayed on sale through the mid-2010s and was still part of BMW Motorrad’s U.S. model-year 2016 lineup. By model year 2017, it no longer appeared in BMW’s motorcycle lineup, marking the end of the nameplate’s continuous production run. In BMW’s GS history, the G 650 GS stands out as one of the clearest examples of the company translating its long-running adventure-bike formula into a simpler, lower-displacement machine for newer riders and practical commuters alike.
