The BMW K 1300 R was introduced for the 2009 model year as BMW Motorrad’s latest naked roadster in its K-series lineup. It followed the K 1200 R and carried forward the series’ four-cylinder, shaft-driven concept, but with a larger-displacement engine and a more aggressive streetfighter character. BMW positioned it as a high-performance power roadster rather than a conventional touring motorcycle, with a focus on strong road presence, sharp handling and everyday-road usability.
The model made its public debut at INTERMOT in 2008 and reached showrooms as part of BMW’s 2009 motorcycle range. In BMW’s own contemporary materials, the K 1300 R was presented as the most powerful naked bike in the company’s history at the time, and it quickly became the visual and performance-focused counterpart to the more fully faired K 1300 S. The K 1300 family represented a refinement of BMW’s inline-four platform, combining the brand’s engineering identity with a more compact and muscular design language.
Over its life, the K 1300 R remained a niche but highly recognizable BMW. It received model-year updates and special editions rather than a complete reinvention, which helped keep the nameplate aligned with BMW’s sportier K-series identity. By the mid-2010s it was still listed in BMW Motorrad price guides, but the nameplate disappeared after the 2016 model year and was not carried forward into the next generation of BMW roadsters. The K 1300 R is remembered as one of BMW’s boldest modern naked bikes, notable for bringing the K-series inline-four formula into a more compact, aggressively styled package.
