The Story of the 328iC

BMW’s 328iC nameplate refers to the 328i convertible variant of the brand’s 3 Series. It belongs to the second-generation BMW 3 Series Convertible, which BMW says arrived in 1994 as a sleeker, more advanced successor to the earlier 325i convertible. In the United States, the 328i convertible became one of the top versions of that E36-era open 3 Series, representing the higher-output end of the range during the late 1990s.

The 328iC was part of BMW’s long-running push to make the compact luxury convertible a serious driver’s car, combining the 3 Series’ sporty image with four-seat open-air practicality. By the end of the 1990s, BMW’s own history materials identify the 323i and 328i convertibles as the final models of that generation, before the next 3 Series convertible launched for 2000 as the 323Ci. That makes the 328iC a distinctly late-E36, pre-2000 BMW convertible, remembered as one of the most desirable versions of the old-style 3 Series drop-top.
