BMW’s K 1200 GT nameplate first appeared for the 2002 model year as a sport-touring derivative of the K 1200 RS, positioned as a more comfort-oriented long-distance machine without giving up the brisk character associated with BMW’s K-series four-cylinder motorcycles. In BMW’s own historical overview, the GT was presented as a complement to the K range for riders who wanted agility, dynamic road manners, and real touring ability in one package. The original version emphasized wind protection, improved rider and passenger comfort, and the practical touring equipment expected of a premium grand touring motorcycle.
A thoroughly revised second-generation K 1200 GT arrived for the 2006 model year. Rather than simply carrying over the earlier bike, BMW moved the nameplate onto the newer transverse inline-four platform that also underpinned the K 1200 S and K 1200 R. That update gave the GT a more modern chassis and a sharper sporting character while preserving its long-distance mission. BMW described it as a machine that combined maximum agility with superior touring comfort, and the model became one of the defining large sport-touring bikes of its era.
The K 1200 GT remained in the lineup through the 2008 model year. It is remembered by enthusiasts as one of BMW’s most distinctive high-performance tourers from the period when the company was pushing its K-series into a more aggressive, technically advanced direction. The nameplate was then succeeded by the K 1300 GT, marking the end of the K 1200 GT era.
