The BMW F 800 S was introduced for the 2006 model year as part of BMW Motorrad’s move into a new middleweight twin-cylinder family. It was presented as a sporty, road-focused motorcycle that sat below BMW’s larger touring and boxer models, and it was significant for bringing a completely new parallel-twin concept to the brand’s lineup. BMW positioned it as the first model in a separate new F-series direction, aimed at riders who wanted a lighter, more accessible machine without giving up the company’s emphasis on stability, comfort, and everyday usability.
The F 800 S arrived alongside the closely related F 800 ST, with the S serving as the sportier of the two. Its launch marked an important moment in BMW motorcycle history because the company was expanding beyond its traditional engine layouts and broadening its market reach in the middleweight class. The model also helped establish the foundation for later F-series machines that would use the same general family name but different body styles and purposes.
BMW continued to list the F 800 S through the 2010 model year, including updates to colors and details, but it was not carried forward in the 2011 model-year motorcycle updates. That places the F 800 S in a relatively short, distinct production run from the mid-2000s through the end of the decade. Today it is remembered as an important transitional BMW motorcycle: practical enough for everyday riding, distinctive in engineering, and notable for helping define BMW’s modern midrange twin strategy.
