The Story of the F 700 GS

The BMW F 700 GS is BMW Motorrad’s mid-size GS adventure motorcycle aimed at riders who wanted the GS image and long-distance versatility in a more approachable package than the larger boxer twins. It was introduced for the 2013 model year as part of BMW’s refreshed F-series lineup, taking over the road-biased role previously filled by the F 650 GS twin. While the name suggested a smaller engine than the F 800 GS, BMW used the same parallel-twin family across the range and tuned the F 700 GS for a friendlier, more accessible character rather than maximum output.

In BMW’s GS family, the F 700 GS occupied the more street-oriented side of the middleweight adventure segment. It was positioned as a lightweight touring enduro with lower seat height, everyday usability, and enough off-road capability to handle unpaved roads and travel use without being a hardcore dirt bike. That made it a popular entry point into the GS range for newer riders, commuters, and travelers who wanted BMW’s adventure styling and chassis philosophy in a less intimidating form.

The model remained in production through the 2018 model year. For 2019, BMW replaced the F 700 GS with the all-new F 750 GS, which marked a deeper redesign of the parallel-twin GS platform and effectively ended the F 700 GS nameplate after a single continuous run. As a result, the F 700 GS is best understood as the modern successor to the earlier F 650 GS twin and as the predecessor to BMW’s later F 750 GS.
