The Story of the F 850 GS

This mid-size BMW adventure model was introduced for the 2018 model year as a thoroughly reworked successor to the F 800 GS, bringing a new 853 cc parallel-twin platform, updated electronics, and a stronger focus on mixed on-road/off-road touring. BMW Motorrad presented the new machine in late 2017, and official BMW material identifies 2018 as its model-year debut. For several years it served as the core mid-range GS enduro in BMW’s lineup, positioned between the lighter entry-level GS models and the larger boxer-powered adventure bikes. The model quickly became a familiar choice for riders who wanted a capable long-distance travel enduro with genuine dirt-road ability rather than a pure street-oriented middleweight. BMW’s own GS history pages place the family’s modern twin-cylinder enduro era at 2008 and later note the 2018 introduction of the revised parallel-twin generation that this model belongs to. In BMW Motorrad’s 2023 model-year materials, it remained an active model, but the 2024 launch of the new F 900 GS described that motorcycle as replacing the previous F 850 GS, which indicates the nameplate’s final model year was 2023. The model therefore had a single continuous production run from its 2018 introduction through 2023, before being succeeded by the F 900 GS for 2024. In enthusiast terms, it is remembered as the mature version of BMW’s middleweight GS formula: more refined and more road-friendly than the older F 800 GS, yet still closely associated with touring, adventure riding, and BMW’s modern GS identity.
