BMW Motorrad introduced the R 1150 R for the 2001 model year as a new boxer-powered roadster aimed at riders who wanted a straightforward, unfaired BMW with a classic mechanical look and everyday usability. It followed BMW’s long-running R-series roadster tradition, building on the earlier R 1100 R while adopting the larger 1150-generation boxer family that BMW rolled out across several models at the start of the decade. From the outset, the R 1150 R was positioned as a versatile, upright naked bike rather than a touring machine, giving the boxer line a more accessible and less enclosed character.
The model quickly became an important part of BMW Motorrad’s range. BMW later described it as a successful roadster and noted that the R 1150 R and its smaller-displacement sibling, the R 850 R, together reached almost 60,000 sales from the launch period through 2006. That success helped establish BMW’s modern roadster identity and showed there was strong demand for a relatively simple, classic-looking BMW boxer in a market increasingly dominated by fully faired or adventure-oriented motorcycles.
During its run, the R 1150 R also spawned the more aggressively styled R 1150 R Rockster, which expanded the same basic platform into a sharper, enthusiast-focused variant. In 2006 BMW introduced the R 1200 R as the direct successor to the R 1150 R, marking the end of the original model’s continuous production run. As a result, the R 1150 R is remembered as the bridge between BMW’s earlier oilhead roadsters and the later R 1200 R generation, and as one of the key motorcycles that defined BMW’s boxer roadster image in the early 2000s.
