BMW introduced the K 100 RS in 1983 as part of its new K-series of motorcycles, debuting it at the Paris Motor Show. It was the sport-touring member of the family and shared its basic layout with the K 100, but added a more aerodynamic half fairing that gave it a clearer long-distance and high-speed touring focus. The K series marked a major shift for BMW Motorrad at the time, bringing a liquid-cooled inline-four engine and a very different technical direction from the company’s traditional boxer twins.
The K 100 RS quickly became one of the best-known BMW motorcycles of the 1980s and helped establish the K-series as a serious alternative for riders who wanted touring comfort with a more modern, road-biased character. BMW’s own historical materials describe it as a successful sports tourer and note that the model remained a common sight years after its launch.
In 1989 BMW modernized the nameplate with the K 100 RS 4V, a revised version that effectively carried K1-era technology under the familiar RS fairing. That later version added a more advanced mechanical package while keeping the dual-seat and pannier-friendly touring character that appealed to riders who liked the K1’s engineering but not its more polarizing bodywork. The K 100 RS nameplate ran through 1992, after which BMW moved on to the K 1100 RS.
