Introduced for the 2023 model year, the XM is BMW M’s first standalone production model since the M1 and was developed as a distinctive high-performance luxury SUV rather than a derivative of an existing X model. BMW unveiled the production version in late 2022 after previewing the concept earlier, and series production began at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg in December 2022, with market launch following in spring 2023. The nameplate was positioned as a showcase for BMW M’s electrified future, combining a plug-in hybrid performance drivetrain with an aggressively styled, full-size luxury body and a cabin aimed at the brand’s most premium buyers. From the outset, the XM was intended to sit at the top of BMW M’s SUV lineup and to broaden the reach of the M brand beyond the traditional sports sedan and coupe formula. Over time, BMW has expanded the line with higher-output variants such as the XM Label and XM Label Red, but the nameplate remains a single continuous production run. It is notable for blending M-specific performance hardware, luxury-focused packaging, and a bold design language that deliberately set it apart from the rest of BMW’s X family.
