BMW introduced the K 75 RT in 1989 as a touring-oriented version of its three-cylinder K-series. It was created at a time when BMW was broadening its liquid-cooled K-family, which had begun in the early 1980s with the company’s new inline engine motorcycles. The K 75 RT used the K 75’s compact three-cylinder layout and paired it with the RT full fairing, giving the model the weather protection and long-distance character associated with BMW’s RT touring line.
The model was developed with a clear practical purpose in mind. BMW’s own historical material says the company was aiming squarely at government and police customers, who were looking for a modern replacement for earlier boxer-based RT machines. That made the K 75 RT especially notable as a lighter, more manageable alternative within BMW’s touring lineup, while still wearing the familiar RT designation that signaled real touring intent.
In period use, the K 75 RT earned a reputation for being nimble and easy to handle compared with larger touring motorcycles. It became a familiar sight in official service and appealed to riders who wanted BMW touring comfort in a smaller, less intimidating package. Production continued through 1996, after which the nameplate ended without a later revival.
