The BMW X1 is BMW’s compact X-model crossover, introduced in 2009 as the brand’s entry point into the premium compact SAV segment. It was developed to bring BMW’s familiar rear-wheel-drive-and-xDrive character, packaging versatility, and urban-friendly proportions into a smaller, more accessible format than the larger X3 and X5. BMW introduced the third generation of the X1 in 2022, giving the model a more mature design, improved interior space, and greater digital emphasis. That generation also brought the first fully electric iX1 variant, reflecting BMW’s broader electrification strategy while keeping the X1 nameplate focused on everyday usability. Across its life, the X1 has remained a core BMW X model: less about hard-core off-road ability and more about premium practicality, all-weather confidence, and compact crossover versatility.
