The Story of the R 18 Classic

This heritage touring variant was introduced by BMW Motorrad in 2021 as the second member of the modern R 18 family, arriving shortly after the original cruiser that reintroduced BMW into the heavyweight heritage segment. It was developed as a more nostalgic, long-distance interpretation of the Big Boxer platform, aimed at riders who wanted the same retro-inspired character in a form closer to the classic touring cruisers of the past.

Visually, it stands apart from the more stripped-back base model through its large windscreen, passenger accommodation, side cases and auxiliary lighting, all of which give it a more traditional touring silhouette. BMW positioned the model as a blend of relaxed cruiser appeal and old-school long-haul practicality rather than a full dresser-style tourer. Like the rest of the R 18 line, it draws on BMW Motorrad’s historical design cues, especially the company’s long boxer-engine heritage and its visual references to earlier large-displacement motorcycles.

The nameplate has remained part of the R 18 range since its debut and has served as the touring-focused counterpart within the family, helping establish the broader modern R 18 series as a multi-model heritage platform rather than a single motorcycle. It is notable for translating BMW’s classic motorcycle identity into a contemporary cruiser with a distinctly vintage touring flavor.
