BMW introduced the R 1200 R as the successor to the R 1150 R, bringing the brand’s classic boxer-roadster formula into a newer era with a lighter chassis, more modern electronics, and a stronger 1,170 cc flat-twin. The model reached showrooms for the 2007 model year and quickly established itself as BMW’s mainstream naked roadster for riders who wanted everyday usability with long-distance capability and the distinctive character of the air-cooled boxer engine.
In 2011, BMW gave the R 1200 R a substantial update and briefly split the range into two personalities: the standard R 1200 R and the more traditionally styled R 1200 R Classic. This refresh added the newer double-overhead-cam boxer architecture and helped sharpen the bike’s performance and refinement while preserving the roadster’s relaxed, versatile nature.
A much deeper redesign arrived for the 2015 model year. BMW moved the R 1200 R to the liquid-cooled boxer family used across its larger R-series motorcycles, giving the roadster a more contemporary technical base and a clearer sporting edge without abandoning its all-rounder identity. That generation became the definitive version of the nameplate and remained in production through the end of the R 1200 era.
The R 1200 R nameplate was ultimately retired when BMW transitioned to the R 1250 R lineup for 2019. Among BMW enthusiasts, the R 1200 R is remembered as one of the brand’s most balanced boxer roadsters: understated, adaptable, and closer in spirit to a classic motorcycle than a pure performance machine, yet still very much a modern BMW.
