BMW introduced the 435i as the six-cylinder upper step in the first 4 Series family, when the brand split the 3 Series coupe line into the new 4 Series for the 2014 model year. The nameplate first appeared on the 4 Series Coupe, which launched in 2013 as a replacement for the former 3 Series Coupe, and it was soon extended to the Convertible and later the Gran Coupe as BMW broadened the 4 Series range. In BMW’s lineup, the 435i sat above the four-cylinder 428i and represented the more traditional inline-six performance choice for buyers who wanted the classic rear-wheel-drive BMW feel in a more stylish, lower-slung body style.
The 435i was closely tied to the early F3x-generation 4 Series era and became known as the highest non-M performance variant before BMW’s naming update. For the 2017 model year, BMW renamed the gasoline six-cylinder 4 Series models as 440i, which marked the end of the 435i badge in the range. Because that change was a direct rename rather than a separate revived chapter, the 435i is generally understood as a single continuous production run from the 2014 through 2016 model years.
Enthusiast interest in the 435i comes from its place in BMW history as one of the last mid-size BMW coupes and grand coupes to carry the familiar 35i designation before the company’s newer naming scheme took over. It also represents the transition from the long-running 3 Series coupe identity to the standalone 4 Series model line, making it a notable modern chapter in BMW’s coupe heritage.
