The Story of the R nineT

BMW Motorrad introduced the R nineT for the 2014 model year as a commemorative heritage roadster marking 90 years of BMW motorcycle production. It was conceived as a purist, highly customizable machine that blended classic BMW boxer-bike cues with contemporary chassis and braking technology, and it quickly became the centerpiece of BMW’s modern Heritage range. The nameplate was launched as a standard roadster and then expanded into a broader family that included the R nineT Scrambler, R nineT Pure, R nineT Racer, and R nineT Urban G/S, each exploring a different take on the same basic idea of a simple, characterful boxer motorcycle.

From the beginning, the R nineT stood out for its modular construction and strong emphasis on personalization, which made it especially attractive to custom builders and enthusiasts. BMW used it as both a lifestyle model and a tribute to the brand’s air-cooled boxer tradition, with styling references drawn from earlier eras of BMW motorcycles rather than any single historic predecessor. That approach helped turn the R nineT into one of BMW’s most recognizable modern heritage models.

BMW kept refining the line over the years with special editions and incremental updates, including a 100 Years Edition for 2023. The original R nineT nameplate was then succeeded by the R 12 nineT, presented for the 2024 model year. The R nineT therefore represents a single continuous production run from its 2014 debut through the 2023 model year, and it remains an important modern landmark in BMW Motorrad history.
