The Story of the R 12 G/S

BMW Motorrad introduced this modern retro enduro for the 2026 model year, positioning it as a contemporary tribute to the original R 80 G/S and the early Paris-Dakar era that helped define BMW’s off-road reputation. The name carries BMW’s traditional G/S shorthand for “Gelände/ Straße,” signaling a motorcycle intended to balance dirt-road ability and everyday road use. Rather than reviving the older machine as a direct replica, BMW folded the concept into its current R 12 family and gave it a more present-day interpretation of the classic boxer-powered adventure formula.

The model’s significance is historical as much as it is stylistic. BMW’s G/S story began with the R 80 G/S in 1980, a motorcycle widely credited with helping establish the large-displacement adventure-enduro category. The R 12 G/S draws on that legacy with a purposeful, pared-back aesthetic, a tall stance, and design cues that intentionally echo BMW’s desert-racing heritage. It is aimed at riders who want a characterful, heritage-inspired machine with genuine off-pavement intent, while still fitting into BMW’s modern boxer lineup. As of its introduction, it is a current production model and does not have a separate earlier production run under this exact nameplate.
