BMW introduced the S 1000 RR for the 2010 model year as its first modern liter-class superbike, developed to bring BMW Motorrad into the high-performance inline-four sportbike segment with a clear racetrack focus. It arrived as a street-legal machine with a strong motorsport connection from the outset, and BMW quickly used the RR as the basis for customer racing and factory-supported competition programs.
The S 1000 RR established BMW as a serious player in superbike racing and endurance competition, and it became especially visible in production-based racing series and road-racing events. BMW Motorsport materials note early customer-racing activity beginning with the model’s launch, and the RR went on to earn notable results in international racing, including Isle of Man TT success in the following years.
Rather than disappearing and returning later, the S 1000 RR has remained a continuous nameplate and has been updated through several major generations since its debut. Those revisions have refined the chassis, electronics and engine character while preserving the original concept: a road-going superbike built with direct racing credibility and strong enthusiast appeal. Today, the S 1000 RR remains BMW’s core superbike offering and one of the brand’s most recognizable performance motorcycles.
