This nameplate first appeared in Suzuki’s lineup for 1982 as a lightweight dual-purpose 250 built around an air-cooled single-cylinder four-stroke engine and Suzuki’s Full Floater rear suspension. It was developed at a time when demand was rising for street-legal off-road motorcycles, and it helped establish Suzuki more firmly in the four-stroke dual-sport category. The early version emphasized manageable performance, relatively light weight, and versatility rather than outright racing focus, making it a practical trail bike with broader everyday appeal.
The nameplate then returned in a very different form for 1990. Suzuki’s later DR250S was introduced as a new off-road model and was notable for bringing inverted front forks to a Japanese production 250cc four-stroke off-road motorcycle. This second-period machine used an oil-cooled single-cylinder engine and was positioned as an easier-handling but more advanced off-roader, aimed at riders who wanted both trail capability and on-road usability. The later DR250S represented a clear technical reset rather than a simple update to the original bike.
Suzuki’s own historical archive shows the 1982 and 1990 DR250S as separate entries, and the model later evolved again into the DR250R in 1995. That makes this nameplate notable for two distinct production eras separated by a gap, with the later generation carrying forward the same basic displacement class but a much more modern chassis and engine concept.
