Suzuki introduced this utility ATV as the successor to its earlier QuadRunner 4WD era, and it became the company’s first machine to carry the KingQuad name. Launched for the 1991 model year, it marked Suzuki’s move to a more capable, premium-positioned four-wheel-drive workhorse aimed at riders who needed more traction, more comfort, and more confidence in rough terrain than the earlier utility quads could provide. The new nameplate helped establish what would become one of Suzuki’s best-known ATV families.
This early KingQuad was built around the practical formula that made Suzuki’s utility quads successful: rugged four-wheel-drive hardware, a low and approachable stance, and a chassis designed for farm, trail, and general off-road use. Suzuki’s own history notes that, compared with the preceding QuadRunner 4WD, the new model adopted a larger-displacement engine, added an oil cooler for low-speed terrain work, and used larger wheels and tires to improve traction and ride comfort. It also retained fully independent front and rear suspension, reinforcing its role as a capable utility machine rather than a pure sport quad.
In enthusiast circles, this model is significant because it helped define the KingQuad identity long before the later fuel-injected and power-steered machines arrived. It is also remembered as one of the early Japanese utility ATVs that bridged the gap between simple farm equipment and the more refined 4x4 ATVs that followed in the 2000s. Production for this first KingQuad generation ran through the 1999 model year, after which Suzuki transitioned the nameplate to a new 300-class successor.
