This North American sport-oriented variant appeared for the 1996 model year as a more powerful, more road-focused member of the first-generation Sidekick family. It was positioned above the standard four-door truck and was meant to give the compact SUV a tougher, more upscale character without losing the model’s small-footprint utility. Compared with the regular versions, it used a wider stance, extended front bodywork, pronounced fender flares, and distinctive exterior trim to visually separate it from the rest of the lineup.
The Sport nameplate is closely tied to the larger-displacement 1.8-liter engine that arrived with this variant, giving the truck a clearer performance emphasis than earlier Sidekicks. It also benefited from equipment that reflected the mid-1990s refresh of the line, including improved safety content and available automatic transmission features. In the U.S. market, the Sport was sold for a short run of three model years, from 1996 through 1998, before the first-generation Sidekick family ended and the next-generation Vitara/Grand Vitara era took over. As a result, it is remembered as the most distinctive and enthusiast-friendly version of the original compact Suzuki SUV sold in North America.
