MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the Valkyrie Rune

This nameplate was introduced for the 2004 model year as a highly styled, limited-production cruiser derived from Honda’s earlier Valkyrie family. Honda first showed it publicly in late 2003 as an overseas exhibition model, positioning it as a dramatic reinterpretation of the original American-style Valkyrie rather than a conventional update. Built in the United States, it carried the Valkyrie badge into a far more radical design direction, with extensive custom-inspired bodywork and an emphasis on visual impact over practicality.

The model was marketed as a premium, low-volume flagship and quickly became notable among enthusiasts for its unusual factory-custom appearance. Its production run was short, spanning only the 2004 and 2005 model years before ending without a direct continuation. That brief lifespan helped cement its reputation as one of the most distinctive and collectible Hondas of the era.

Although it shared lineage with the earlier Valkyrie cruiser, this was not merely a trim update or a simple refresh. It stood apart as a separate, more sculptural interpretation of the nameplate, intended to showcase Honda’s engineering and design ambition in a showpiece motorcycle. Today it is remembered less for volume sales than for its status as a bold, limited-run statement bike and one of the most memorable Japanese factory customs of the 2000s.
