The Story of the Sportrax

Honda used the Sportrax name as a sport-oriented sub-brand for its recreational ATVs in the early 2000s. It appeared when Honda was repositioning its sport quad lineup away from the older FourTrax badge and toward a more youth- and performance-focused identity. The name was applied to several TRX models, including the small Sportrax 90 and the larger Sportrax 250EX, 300EX, and 400EX, giving Honda’s sport ATV range a more unified marketing identity. In practice, Sportrax became closely associated with Honda’s easy-to-ride, trail-friendly sport quads rather than its utility machines.

The Sportrax era is best understood as a naming phase within Honda’s ATV history rather than a single mechanical model. Different displacements shared the badge, but each served a different rider group, from youth riders to more experienced sport-ATV enthusiasts. By the end of the 2000s, Honda gradually moved away from the Sportrax wording and standardized the lineup under TRX model names with X suffixes, such as the TRX90X and TRX250X. That change effectively retired Sportrax from new-market branding, even though the name remains familiar to Honda ATV enthusiasts and still appears in legacy documentation and owner materials. The Sportrax badge helped define Honda’s sport-quad identity during a period when the company was refining its off-road lineup for a new generation of riders.
