MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the Element

This nameplate was introduced for the 2003 model year as Honda’s unconventional compact utility vehicle, developed from the Model X concept and aimed at buyers who wanted maximum flexibility, easy-clean practicality, and a design that stood apart from conventional SUVs. Its early identity was defined by boxy styling, rear-hinged side doors, a pillarless side structure, and a highly modular interior that made it especially popular with active-lifestyle buyers, pet owners, and the outdoor community. Honda positioned it as a highly usable small utility vehicle rather than a luxury crossover, and its U.S.-built origins became part of its appeal among enthusiasts who appreciated its honest, function-first character. Over its run, the model received incremental updates rather than a full redesign, including a significant freshening for the 2009 model year that gave it a more sculpted appearance and revised cabin details. Honda announced that production would end after the 2011 model year, closing out a single continuous generation and leaving the vehicle as one of Honda’s most distinctive modern U.S.-market utility models.
