The Story of the Softail Deluxe 103

Harley-Davidson’s Softail Deluxe 103 was the later Twin Cam 103 version of the long-running Deluxe nameplate, a retro-styled Softail built around classic boulevard-cruiser cues. The Deluxe itself drew heavily on Harley-Davidson’s nostalgia-rich design language, with full valanced fenders, extensive chrome, whitewall tires, and a hardtail look paired with hidden rear suspension. For the 2012 model year, Harley-Davidson updated the Deluxe with the larger Twin Cam 103 engine, giving the model the stronger touring and passing performance that had already been reaching other Big Twin Softails. That 103-powered Deluxe remained in the lineup through the 2017 model year, and it kept the same role as one of the brand’s most traditional, detail-heavy cruisers. It was especially popular with riders who wanted old-school styling without giving up the easier ride and modern road manners of the Softail chassis. The 2018 Softail redesign ended this specific Twin Cam-era Deluxe configuration, so the Softail Deluxe 103 exists as a distinct 2012–2017 production run within the broader Deluxe lineage.
