The Story of the Heritage Classic

Harley-Davidson introduced this nameplate for the 2018 model year as part of its redesigned Softail lineup, replacing the earlier Heritage Softail Classic identity with a cleaner, updated factory-custom interpretation of the brand’s long-running nostalgic touring theme. The model keeps the classic Harley-Davidson dresser look that made the Heritage line popular—most notably its windscreen, saddlebags, chrome-and-black vintage cues, and relaxed long-distance character—but places that styling on the newer Softail chassis introduced for 2018. That shift marked a major turning point for the nameplate, moving it from the older twin-shock-era look into a more modern riding platform while preserving the retro appearance enthusiasts expect. Over time, the model has remained positioned as a classic-styled cruiser with light touring ability, aimed at riders who want heritage styling without giving up contemporary performance and handling. It continues to serve as one of Harley-Davidson’s most traditional-looking Softail models and a direct link to the company’s postwar design language.
