MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the FXLR

This FXR-family Low Rider Custom appeared for the 1987 model year as a factory-custom interpretation of Harley-Davidson’s long-running Low Rider theme. The nameplate built on the company’s earlier Low Rider heritage, but this version was tied to the FXR chassis rather than the earlier Big Twin platform, giving it a distinct place in Harley-Davidson history. Service literature and parts documentation identify the model across the 1987 through 1994 model years, with 1994 marking the end of its first and only continuous production run.

The bike arrived during an important era for Harley-Davidson, when the FXR line was becoming known for its more modern chassis and touring-friendly manners compared with older Big Twin designs. Within that family, the FXLR represented the more cruiser-oriented Low Rider custom, combining the low-slung attitude associated with the Low Rider name with the FXR platform’s improved road manners. It became one of the better-known late FXR variants and is remembered by enthusiasts as part of the final chapter of the original FXR generation before Harley-Davidson shifted more of its attention to the new Dyna family in the mid-1990s.
