MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the FXD

This Harley-Davidson nameplate began in the mid-1990s as the Dyna Super Glide, part of the company’s Dyna family that built on the original factory-custom Super Glide concept. The FXD designation appears in Harley-Davidson materials for 1995, and the model became one of the better-known members of the Dyna lineup, representing the stripped-down, standard-style end of the family rather than the more heavily styled Low Rider or Wide Glide variants.

During the Dyna era, the FXD served as the straightforward, classic cruiser in the range. It carried the Super Glide idea forward with the Dyna chassis and remained a familiar part of Harley-Davidson’s cruiser catalog for many years. The Dyna line itself was retired after the 2017 model year, which ended the first production period for the FXD as it had been known through that era.

Harley-Davidson later brought the name back in 2026 with a limited-edition Super Glide wearing FXD branding. The company described it as a rare return of one of its influential names and tied it directly to the original 1971 FX Super Glide, emphasizing the model’s role in Harley-Davidson’s factory-custom history. Because the nameplate was discontinued and later revived, the FXD has multiple production periods rather than one continuous run.

For enthusiasts, the FXD matters as a clean, traditional expression of the Dyna platform and as a bridge between Harley-Davidson’s early factory-custom heritage and a modern revival that consciously nods back to the original Super Glide formula.
