MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the FLHX / Street Glide

Introduced for the 2006 model year, this nameplate brought a new, stripped-down touring attitude to Harley-Davidson’s big-twin lineup. It was conceived as a factory custom with a chopped windshield, low-slung stance, and the brand’s classic batwing fairing, blending long-distance Touring hardware with a more aggressive, urban-leaning silhouette. That combination quickly made it one of the most recognizable modern touring motorcycles in the lineup.

From the beginning, the model occupied a distinct space between full-dress touring comfort and a cleaner custom look. Rather than chasing the ultra-luxury approach of the heavier tourers, it emphasized style, presence, and road-trip capability in a package that appealed to riders who wanted a less traditional profile without giving up the practicality of saddlebags and fairing protection.

Its history is tied closely to the broader evolution of the Touring family. In 2009, Harley-Davidson redesigned the Touring frame, improving handling and rider comfort across the range, and the model continued to evolve with the rest of the family in later years. The 2014 Project Rushmore updates brought another major modernization to the Touring line, refining aerodynamics, electronics, and touring convenience. In 2024, the model was part of an all-new Street Glide generation, marking a significant visual and technical redesign while preserving the core character that made the nameplate popular in the first place.

Today it remains one of the defining names in Harley-Davidson’s Grand American Touring lineup: a long-distance cruiser with a strong custom identity, broad enthusiast appeal, and a clear place in modern American motorcycle culture.
