MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the Freewheeler

Introduced for the 2015 model year, this three-wheeled Harley-Davidson trike was created as a stripped-down, hot-rod alternative to the brand’s more touring-focused trike offerings. It arrived as an all-new nameplate rather than a reboot of an earlier Harley trike, with styling meant to echo the company’s classic cruiser look: a low, broad stance, bobtail rear fenders, mini-ape handlebars, and a rear trunk integrated into a simpler, less ornate design. From the beginning, it was positioned for riders who wanted the added stability and carrying convenience of three wheels without moving into a full touring silhouette.

The nameplate has remained part of Harley-Davidson’s trike family since its debut and is still offered in the current lineup. Over time, the model has kept its core identity intact: a relaxed two-up cruiser format, luggage space built into the rear bodywork, and the visual language of a custom bagger distilled into a three-wheel package. That continuity has made it a recognizable choice for riders drawn to Harley-Davidson’s traditional styling but interested in the confidence and practicality that come with a trike chassis.

In Harley-Davidson history, the model stands out as the company’s more muscular, minimal trike concept, distinct from the larger touring-oriented three-wheel models. It helped broaden the brand’s trike appeal by giving buyers a factory-built option with a more aggressive, boulevard-oriented personality. Its significance lies less in reinvention than in refinement: it translated the stripped-back custom cruiser aesthetic into a dedicated three-wheel format and kept that formula in production through the present day.
