Harley-Davidson added the 1200cc Sportster to its lineup for the 1988 model year as the larger-displacement member of the Sportster family, identified in Harley-Davidson’s own model-code references as XL1200. It built on the Sportster lineage that began in 1957, but the 1200 brought a more powerful Evolution-era direction to the platform and helped define the model’s role as the stronger, sportier sibling to the 883. Through the 1990s and early 2000s, the 1200 stayed central to Harley-Davidson’s middleweight lineup and was offered in several related Sportster variants and trim directions, including custom and performance-oriented versions. The plain XL1200 designation ran through the 2003 model year, after which Harley-Davidson reorganized the 1200cc Sportster range into more specifically named versions such as the Custom, Sport, and Roadster. As a result, this nameplate is best understood as the classic 1988–2003 1200cc Sportster model line rather than a continuously current standalone model.
