MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the Hi-Cube

This nameplate was GMC’s commercial extended-wheelbase van/cutaway offering within the G-series era. It appeared by the 1978 model year as the hi-roof cargo-oriented counterpart to GMC’s standard van lineup, aimed at delivery, upfit, and passenger-duty use rather than everyday family transport. Through the late 1970s and 1980s, it was part of GMC’s heavy-duty van family and was commonly associated with cutaway and box-conversion applications, making it a familiar sight in commercial fleets, shuttle service, and specialized body-builder work. For the 1996 model year, GMC’s full-size van line was being replaced by the new GMT600-generation Savana/Express family, marking the end of the original G-series-era hi-cube-style van. The nameplate did not have a known separate revival after that continuous run.
