The Story of the Hummer EV Pickup

GMC brought the Hummer name back as an all-electric pickup for the 2022 model year, reviving one of General Motors’ most recognizable truck nameplates in a completely new form. Unlike the original Hummer line, which began as a civilian offshoot of the military Humvee and later became a separate gasoline-powered brand, the GMC-branded electric pickup was introduced as part of the company’s Ultium-era EV strategy and positioned as a flagship off-road “supertruck.” It reached production in late 2021 and went on sale as a 2022 model, making that model year the first for this exact nameplate.

The truck was unveiled first, with the launch centered on the Edition 1, and GMC later expanded the range with additional trims and model-year updates. In GMC’s lineup, it sits at the top end of the brand’s truck and EV offerings, emphasizing extreme capability, advanced chassis and off-road hardware, and a bold design that clearly references the blocky, upright proportions associated with the classic Hummer image. The pickup arrived before the related HUMMER EV SUV, so the pickup body style was the original return path for the nameplate in GMC’s modern electric era.

Because the vehicle remains in production, there is no final model year to record yet. Its history so far is that of a single continuous production run beginning with the 2022 model year, rather than a discontinued-and-revived nameplate. For enthusiasts, it marks GMC’s reinvention of a famous off-road badge as a premium battery-electric truck rather than a traditional internal-combustion SUV or pickup.
