MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the W5

This GMC medium-duty cab-over nameplate began with the Forward/Tiltmaster series introduced for the 1988 model year, when GMC refreshed its Class 4-5 forward-control truck line with W-series variants. The designation continued through the 1990s as the market shifted toward Isuzu-based medium-duty trucks sold through GMC, and the W5 badge remained part of GMC’s work-truck vocabulary on heavier forward-control models. In the late 1990s and 2000s, the line evolved into the W5500 Forward, reflecting the broader modernization of GMC’s medium-duty lineup while retaining the same basic job-focused cab-over formula. The model was aimed at commercial buyers who needed a compact cab, good visibility and easy maneuverability for delivery, utility and vocational use. By the end of the 2010 model year, the W5/W5500-era GMC forward-control medium-duty truck had run its course, with GMC moving on to newer commercial truck offerings.
