This nameplate arrived for the 1989 model year as GM’s small, Suzuki-sourced sport-utility entry in the Geo lineup. It was developed from the Suzuki Sidekick/Vitara family and gave the brand a lightweight, affordable off-road-capable option at a time when compact SUVs were still a niche. Early versions were sold in two-door form, including convertible and hardtop body styles, which helped establish its image as a simple, fun, open-air utility vehicle rather than a mainstream family SUV. A four-door version joined later in the run, broadening its appeal while keeping the same basic compact, body-on-frame character. The Geo branding ended after the 1997 model year, and the vehicle continued on under a different Chevrolet nameplate beginning in 1998. Among enthusiasts, it remains remembered as one of the most recognizable small 4x4s of the late 1980s and 1990s, especially for its approachable size, straightforward mechanical layout, and strong aftermarket following.
