MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the Vandura

GMC introduced this full-size van nameplate for the 1971 model year as its counterpart to Chevrolet’s G-series van line. It replaced GMC’s earlier cab-forward Handi-Van and Handi-Bus models and quickly became the division’s familiar badge for cargo-oriented G-series vans. Through the 1970s and 1980s, it served a wide range of commercial, passenger, and conversion-van buyers, with the line evolving over time while keeping the same basic unibody full-size-van concept. The nameplate remained in use until the end of the G-series era, when GMC replaced it with the Savana for 1996. Among enthusiasts, the van became especially well known for its boxy late-1970s and 1980s styling, widespread aftermarket conversion use, and its long-running place in American van culture.
