MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the Canyon

GMC introduced this midsize pickup for the 2004 model year as a new addition to its truck lineup, giving the brand a smaller alternative beneath Sierra. The first-generation truck ran through the 2012 model year and was offered in several cab and bed configurations during its early years, helping GMC compete in the compact-to-midsize pickup segment alongside its corporate twin from Chevrolet. After the 2012 model year, the nameplate disappeared for 2013 and 2014, ending the original run.

The truck returned as an all-new model for 2015, marking a clear second production period rather than a continuation of the original series. The revived version was larger, more refined, and positioned as a modern midsize pickup with a stronger emphasis on comfort, technology, and premium trim content. Over time, it gained distinct GMC personality through higher-end trims and off-road-oriented variants, moving the nameplate closer to the brand’s upscale truck identity while keeping its practical midsize footprint.

In enthusiast terms, the nameplate is notable for bridging two eras of the midsize pickup market: the earlier, more compact first generation and the later, more mature revival that helped reestablish GMC in a segment it had temporarily left. It remains a key part of GMC’s truck portfolio and continues in production today.
