The Story of the W3

The W3 designation belongs to GMC’s medium-duty W-series cab-over truck line, a commercial nameplate that was part of GM’s truck portfolio for business and fleet use. GM’s own historical material shows the W-series among the medium-duty GMC truck families by the mid-1990s, and GM VIN documentation identifies W-series variants as tilt-cab medium-duty trucks with different wheelbase and cab configurations, including the W3/W4 steel medium cab style. The line was closely tied to GM’s Isuzu-based medium-duty program and was sold in several duty classes and body setups rather than as a consumer-focused truck. Over time, the W-series evolved through updated VIN series and cab codes, with later GM documentation still listing W-series medium-duty trucks through the 2009 model year. After that, the GMC medium-duty W-series nameplate was no longer carried forward in the same form.
