The Story of the Aluminum Tilt

GMC used this nameplate for its early aluminum tilt-cab heavy-duty truck cab, a forward-control design that gave drivers better visibility and easier access than a conventional hooded truck. It appeared on GMC medium- and heavy-duty trucks in the 1960s, most notably on the company’s heavier vocational and tractor-style chassis. The aluminum cab construction was part of GMC’s push to reduce weight while improving durability and driver packaging in an era when cab-over-engine trucks were central to long-haul and heavy commercial work. The design ran for the 1963 through 1968 model years, after which GMC moved to a new generation of cab-over heavy-duty trucks for 1969. In GMC history, it represents the bridge between the earlier tilt-cab era and the later Astro cab-over family, and it is remembered as one of the brand’s distinctive all-aluminum commercial truck cabs.
