The Story of the W5500/W5500 HD

This medium-duty low cab forward nameplate was introduced for the 2005 model year as part of General Motors’ rebadged W-Series commercial truck line, giving GMC dealers a compact but heavy-capacity forward-control chassis for vocational use. It shared its basic architecture with the contemporary Isuzu N-Series, reflecting GM’s commercial-vehicle partnership strategy in the mid-2000s rather than an all-new in-house truck program. The higher-capacity HD version sat near the top of the GMC W-Series range and was aimed at buyers who needed a straightforward work chassis for delivery, utility, beverage, towing, and other upfit-heavy jobs. The W-Series continued through the end of the 2010 model year, after which GM’s medium-duty commercial lineup moved on to later-generation offerings. For enthusiasts and fleet historians, it represents the final era of GMC-branded low cab forward medium-duty trucks before the nameplate disappeared from the market.
